The Met Gala, is an inaugural event which marks the annual exhibition of The Costume Institute. It is carried out the first Monday of May every year in New York City. But what makes it the most expected fashion event of the year?

Dress Code

This event is so controversial and spectacular because of the theme which is carried out every year in the exhibition of the Met, where every celebrity and personality has a dress code according to the exhibition theme of the year. Hello, Nook fashionist, have you ever wondered how fashion came about? Fashion is an art that changes according to the decade and with it the largest history book is made.

Today I bring you a brief summary of the history of fashion that you cannot miss because that way you can discover more about it.

From 1800 to 1890 fashion became a “New Era” concept, princess cut, light fabrics such as cotton, linen, terylene and muslin. Corsets became less stiff, shawls, simulation of tunics, etc.

The most characteristic of this period was the shirt dress, a dress with a straight and pronounced neckline, tight below the chest and falling straight down to the feet.

The silhouette changed again at the end of the period and was inspired by classical Greek and Roman fashion. A thin and soft dress that covered the entire chest called Chemise which is part of the fashion of the empire.

From 1900 to 1910 France was known as the center of fashion.

Overloaded hats, fur dresses, feathers, hourglass silhouettes and long dresses characterized the beginning of the XX century.

At this time, magazines stopped being illustrated to be photographed, and one of the first French magazines to include model photography was “Les Modes” published in Paris and distributed in London, Berlin and New York.

Evelyn Nasbit was one of the first models in the history of fashion, appearing in Vanity Fair and Harper’s-Bazaar.

Paul Poiret, the famous “King of fashion” came to free women from the corset, and made silhouettes very advanced for the time, he believed that the true fashion lovers who were really elegant, were those who “invented fashion” not those who followed it. He gained fame with the creation of the so-called “La Vage” silhouette. It was so narrow at the bottom that you could only walk in it by taking tiny steps. “I have freed their torsos, but I have tied their legs,” the couturier said.

The famous 20’s, full of glamour and rebellion. This decade was mainly influenced by social changes, women’s liberation and the rebellion marked by the end of the First War; fun, nightlife, extravagance and sophistication.

The simplicity of the day dresses, is oriented to work, with straight cuts and resistant fabrics such as knit, for the night it becomes an absolute show of luxury and expression; bright dresses with sequins and embroidery, fur, fringe and marabou feathers, was an exaggerated sophistication, loaded with accessories such as capes, headdresses, hairnets, and some masculine as the cane, the monocle and the long mouthpieces.

The makeup was intense red and purple tones, white skin, small and heart-shaped mouth, highlighting her cheeks and eyelashes and plucking her eyebrows.

Hi Nook’ Fashionist! I‘m so excited to bring you my first article, and what better way to tell you about: What is fashion?

First of all, let’s start by defining the word “fashion”, which comes from French “Mode”. This term began to be used in the 15th century and it derives from latin “Modus” which means mode.

Is so important to know this concept to understand the industry world. To many people fashion can mean something extremely different like clothing, fashion designers, runways, red carpets, trends, fashion magazines, etc. But fashion isn’t just clothing and red carpets; fashion  goes beyond that: it is history, a design, a form  of expression for transmitting what you are, it means keeping up and a lifestyle.

In a simplified way, fashion is a journey in which someone innovates and the rest copy it in a  specific context or  moment. This means that it’s the way to behave or do something that’s accepted and used by the society at the present. To fashion, being fashionable is related to what is happening today, and tends to  have a lot of diffusion during a few months or what is known as “seasons”

Fashion is an expression and communication nonverbal mode that helps us to transmit what we really are, which is reflected in our clothes, styles and physiognomy. It helps us to tell a story, expressing our feelings and passions. It’s the perfect way to distinguish from someone else and one way to share and join with other people. Fashion globalises and expands instantly.

Fashion is ephemeral. What everyone wears today, tomorrow can be unfashionable  but it can return in the future, since fashion is cyclical and it’s constantly changing; adapting to each situation and to each social, political and cultural environment. Fashion is the present and the future.

Alexander Mcqueen Spring 2013
Loewe Spring 2022

Why do I love fashion? Because for a long time, inside the industry history, it has been a great struggle for society, and above all for womens. For them to express themselves: dress however they want to and without any prejudice to feel empowered and happy with themselves. It’s a way to transmit and project who you are and what you like, whether in someone else or in yourself. It’s creativity, it’s art, it’s history, and it’s YOU.

Hi Nook’ Fashionist! Have you ever heard the word colorimetry? Colorimetry or color theory is very important in fashion, makeup, film, advertising and marketing, colors always reflect something, they have a meaning and a reason. What do you think if we start?

CHROMATIC CIRCLE

What is the chromatic circle? The chromatic circle is a color combination wheel, that is to say, from where the colors arise, from the primary colors you can get as many colors as you want.

The colors of this circle are composed of families which vary in the tone and intensity, these families are composed of the following colors:

  • Purple
  • Red
  • Yellow
  • Cyan blue
  • Green
  • Dark blue.

It also helps us to identify warm and cold colors and what color palette they can combine, allowing us to demonstrate color saturation and prisms.

ANALOGOUS COLORS

The analogous colors are those that are next to each color within the chromatic circle, for example, green and yellow, blue and violet are the neighboring colors

Photo:Leonie Hanne

COMPLEMENT COLORS

This is the name given to the opposite colors within the chromatic circle, but which complement each other and make great combinations, something like opposites attract. For example, red with yellow green or greenish blue.

Photo:  fustany.com

INDIRECT COMPLEMENT COLORS

They are colors that mix. A base color with opposite colors and when you put them together they make an incredible harmony. For example, orange, green and blue.

Photo: Leonie Hanne

COLORS TRIAD :

They are colors within the circle that form an imaginary triangle, for example blue, purple and red.

Photo:  eonline.com

MONOCHROMATIC COLORS

Minimalism is its maximum expression. This color palette is formed by a single color with different tones, for example, strong violet, light violet, medium violet. Something like a total look.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN WARM COLORS AND COLD COLORS

Cold colors: They are all those that are associated with the range of blue to green, these colors are considered as sad, nostalgic, pale, sentimental, etc.

Warm colors: They are all those that are associated with the range of reds to yellows, these colors reflect joy, positivism, light, freshness, freedom and companionship.

Photo:  pinterest.com

CMYK: The abbreviation for cyan, magenta, yellow and key, this code is used for printing colors.

RGB: It is the abbreviation for red, green and blue, and deals with the luminosity of the primary colors. This code is used in digital devices and images.

PANTONE:

Have you heard of the colors of the year? Well, Pantone is the one in charge of bringing them out, and here I present to you what it is.

Photo:  pinterest.com

Lawrence Herbert founded the Pantone system in 1963, which allowed to identify colors in a faster way. Today Pantone is an American company, creator of the PMS (Pantone Matching System), which gives codes for printing in a quick and easy way.

There are pantone samples which are pieces of cardboard with the color impregnated and the color code, even today the color swatch is sold.

Note: although the code is the same, it depends on the intensity of the printer and the computer.

BASIC COLORS

Blue: This color is associated with intelligence, depth, emotional stability, power, seriousness, faith and sincerity

Red: Red is an intense color, related to passion and fire, it is associated with romance, friendship, attention; determination, eroticism, blood, courage and sensuality.

Yellow: They say that he who wears yellow is because he trusts in his beauty, the color of the sun. A bright tone, which is associated with kindness, confidence, happiness, joy and energy.

Purple: A very strong shade, associated with elegance, femininity, power; royalty, magic, ambition, creativity and luxury.

Green: The color of nature, it is a very relaxing tone, associated with tranquility, peace, harmony, freshness, stability and freedom.

White: Although white is not considered a color since it is the clarity of all colors, it does have a meaning and is associated with peace, purity, elegance, cleanliness, freshness and goodness.

Black: Like white, this is not considered a color, it is simply the darkness of colors, but it also has its meaning as maturity, elegance, negativity, sadness, seriousness, formality and rebellion.

There is definitely a lot to know about colors, but this is the basis of all colorimetry. Colors always speak to us, they reflect something to us and that’s why our whole life revolves around them. Dare to try different colors in your outfit.
